A devastating gang attack on the town of Pont-Sondé in central Haiti has claimed the lives of at least 70 people, including women, infants, and a young mother with her newborn.

The UN reports that heavily armed gang members from the Gran Grif gang, led by Luckson Elan, carried out the massacre, setting fire to homes and cars.

The motive for the massacre remains unclear, though gang violence has surged in Haiti, especially in areas like Artibonite, a key agricultural hub.
