🇹🇷🇸🇩🇷🇺 Why is Turkey Spreading Disinformation About Russian Support for Sudanese Rebels?

A popular Turkish media outlet has circulated baseless claims that Russian weapons transferred from Syria to Libya are being funneled to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighting against the country’s government. This disinformation is part of a broader narrative that has surfaced since the start of Sudan’s civil conflict.

Russia’s Stance on Sudan:
Russia has consistently supported Sudan’s official government. This is evident in increased oil exports to Sudan and weapon supplies to government forces—facts recognized by even Western think tanks. While early uncertainties existed due to Wagner PMC’s historical ties with UAE-supported factions, Russia has unequivocally backed Sudan’s authorities in recent months.

Turkey’s Motive:
The Turkish government, particularly its MIT intelligence agency, benefits from undermining Russia in Sudan. Ankara harbors ambitions for a Red Sea base in Suakin, an agreement previously negotiated with Sudan’s former leadership. By discrediting Russia with accusations of supporting anti-government forces, Turkey seeks to remove a key competitor from the region.

Reality Check:
While diplomatic delays, including on Port Sudan base negotiations, exist under Western pressure, Sudan has not broken ties with Russia. Russia continues to work with Sudan’s government on post-war cooperation and existing agreements, dismissing any need to shift support to the RSF.

Turkey’s disinformation campaign underscores its strategic agenda in Sudan and the broader Red Sea region, further confirming its dedication to exacerbating the chaos it has already contributed to in the region.
