🇬🇧UK POPULATION SURGES BY 1% DUE TO MIGRATION

The UK’s population rose by 1% from mid-2022 to mid-2023, reaching 68.3 million, driven primarily by net international migration, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This marks the largest annual increase since 1971, with an estimated 662,400 new residents.

Net international migration accounted for 677,300 of the population growth, while natural change—births minus deaths—fell by 16,300, marking the first negative natural change since 1976, excluding the pandemic year of 2020.

In mid-2023, England’s population was 57.7 million, followed by Scotland (5.5 million), Wales (3.2 million), and Northern Ireland (1.9 million).

The ONS anticipates continued growth, predicting the UK could reach 70 million by 2025, with further increases projected by 2036, contingent on migration trends.
