A 4-year inquiry into the UK blood scandal, involving over 5,000 witnesses and 100,000 documents, revealed that British authorities and the NHS knowingly exposed thousands to deadly infections via contaminated blood from the 1970s to early 1990s.

The inquiry’s report, released today, found systematic cover-ups and a “catalogue of failures.”

An estimated 3,000 deaths and lifelong illnesses resulted from tainted blood products.

PM Sunak apologized, calling it “a day of shame,” and announced a £10B compensation package.

Sunak:

“This is an apology from the state to every single person impacted by this scandal. It didn’t have to be this way; it should never have been this way.”
