🚨🇭🇹HOW DID HAITI END UP ON THE BRINK? FROM ‘PAPA DOC’ to ‘BARBEQUE’

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned after weeks of turmoil caused by jailbreaks and gang violence under Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier’s reign intensifying.

Chérizier, a former Special Forces Officer turned ruthless gang leader, threatens to become the next “Papa Doc,” aiming to free Haiti from what he claims is anti-democratic rule.

Haiti’s deep-rooted crisis stems from the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, exacerbating historic challenges.

The Duvalier dictatorship legacy looms large: François “Papa Doc” Duvalier’s rule from 1957 to 1971 was marked by terror, with political opponents ruthlessly eliminated using his secret police, the Tonton Macoutes. This era, followed by his son “Baby Doc,” entrenched systemic corruption and human rights abuses, bleeding Haiti dry.

With no elections for seven years and external influences at play, gangs exploit the nation’s fragility, evidenced by the tragic toll of nearly 4,000 lives to gang violence in 2023 alone.

As “Barbecue” seeks to position himself as a liberator, comparisons to “Papa Doc’s” authoritarian rule raise fears of a new era of dictatorship, highlighting the urgent need for stability and democracy in Haiti.
