The legal advisor to the occupation government supports the dismissal of Ben “Gvir”… Is “Israel” on the verge of a constitutional crisis?

The legal advisor to the occupation government, Gali Bahrab-Mayar, said on Thursday evening that the Israeli occupation Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, should “reconsider” his position regarding the continuation of the Minister of National Security in the occupation government, Itamar Ben-Gvir.

She added that the combination of alleged improper interference in police activities and the improper approval of police officers in their promotion undermines the possibility of ensuring that the police will operate out of loyalty to the public and the people and not in the service of political purposes.

The response of the occupation government’s legal advisor came against the backdrop of the petition submitted by the “Awakening” movement to the Supreme Court against Ben Gvir’s continued position. Bahrab Mayar had decided to postpone her response twice, and informed Netanyahu this evening of her opinion, and it seems that she will support the petition.

But even before the attorney general of the occupation government published her opinion, Netanyahu and ministers in his government attacked the attorney general at the beginning of the week, and said that she would support the petition. Netanyahu even made it clear that he would not dismiss Ben-Gvir, and stressed that his dismissal through the Supreme Court of Justice is “the fast track to a constitutional crisis.”

Ben Ghobeir said in a government discussion that the legal advisor wants to overthrow the government, linking these legal efforts to the media leaks against him, and accusing the Israeli Shin Bet of involvement in the process of targeting him, as he described it.

During the discussion, one of the ministers said that this should be stopped and that the attorney general should be prevented from interfering in government affairs. Netanyahu jokingly replied: Don’t worry, I won’t fire you. Ben-Gvir then commented, saying: Today it’s me, tomorrow it’s you. They want to take over the government constitutionally by firing a minister without an indictment.

Since Ben Gvir took office, petitions have been filed from time to time to convict him, but the occupation government’s legal advisor has rejected them and the Supreme Court has also rejected them. However, this time, it decided to deal positively with the petition filed against Ben Gvir, which relates to appointments and dismissals in the police based on political and personal motives.

The attorney general spoke about Ben Gvir’s interference in the police’s work: “According to the allegations, the minister interfered in police activities in a manner that contradicts the policy of the government and the political-security cabinet. These illegal interferences in police work, directly or indirectly, cause great harm to the integrity of the police’s work.”

She continued: “In practice, the professional future and promotion of hundreds of Israeli police officers depends on the will of the minister. From the evidence presented in the petition, it appears that the minister is using the authority to appoint and dismiss in a manner that constitutes improper interference in the police’s operational activities.”

She stressed that “the combination of the Minister’s powers in relation to the police, his practical and immediate impact on the professional future of its officers, and the apparently improper interference in its practical activity, harms the possibility of ensuring that the police act impartially, away from political considerations, and constitutes a systematic deviation from the basic principle according to which the police must act.”
