Erdoğan told Guterres in a phone call today that Syria has entered a “calmly managed new phase” and urged Damascus to engage rapidly with its people for a political resolution.

Guterres stressed the urgent need for humanitarian access and a return to the UN-facilitated political process to end the ongoing bloodshed.

Guterres has declared, “Syria is on fire,” urging humanitarian access and action. But let’s be honest—how many times have we heard the UN shout into the void?

Rebels just took Hama, Assad’s regime is reeling, and civilians are in danger, but Guterres’ calls for peace are about as effective as yelling at a hurricane.

World powers have ignored UN’s calls before—why would this time be any different?

Maybe one day the UN will get its wish, but for now, the chaos rages on.
