The government says its new law, the ‘Hate Crime and Public Order Act’, which persecutes “threatening or abusive behavior which is entered to stir up hatred” due to age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, is to provide greater protection for persecuted groups.

About 3,000 complaints were filed in the first few days following the law’s passage, now settling to about 100-200 per week.

90% of the complaints related to this law were dismissed by the police, fueling concerns about the law’s potential to inundate law enforcement.

JK Rowling and Elon both proclaimed the law harms free speech. Ironically, police have already received complaints about Rowling because of the new law, but thus far, said no action will be taken.
