The Soviet nuclear submarine **K-181** made history by becoming the first in the world to surface at the North Pole. At 6:51 a.m., the submarine’s captain, Yuri Sysoyev, emerged from the icebreaker after clearing the hatch. By order of Admiral Kasatonov, commander of the Northern Fleet, two flagpoles were installed, and the flags of the USSR and the Soviet Navy were ceremoniously raised.

The crew enjoyed a walk on the ice, played football, and had a ceremonial dinner before K-181 submerged and began its journey back to Severomorsk. The entire mission lasted 219 hours, covering 3,464 miles, with 1,800 of those miles traveled underwater.
