Biden’s efforts to retain influence in West Africa was dealt a big blow this week when Niger’s military declared it would revoke its cooperation deal with Washington.

The Pentagon formally ordered the withdrawal of the 1,000 U.S. troops stationed there to be carried out within a few months, though some negotiations are expected.

The news came after Niger and Russia made statements about strengthening the nation’s ties with Russia.
