“Are the statements of Israeli officials realistic?” … A reserve general in the Israeli occupation army talks about Israeli illusions in #Lebanon

Reserve general in the occupation army and security expert #Jack_Neriah said that the occupation Minister of War, “Israel Katz”, says, like his predecessor, “that #Hezbollah has been defeated and 80% of its missiles have been destroyed, but the question now is; is this the truth?”

Neria added: Are these statements intended to prepare public opinion for an agreement that does not fully meet the expectations of 80,000 settlers in the north who want to return to their settlements that they left long ago?

According to Maj. Gen. (res.) Jacques Neriah, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Foreign and Security Affairs (JCFA), who previously served as Israel’s military attaché to France and political advisor to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, various parties at the political and military levels claim that the ceasefire negotiations will be held under fire, and that the fighting will continue until Hezbollah is crushed and the ground operation deepens. Do those who claim this really believe what they are saying?

He asked: “Is this a mirage that they are trying to convince themselves of? It is clear to everyone that this is not true and the return of the settlers is not possible and a repetition of the October 7 scenario on the northern border is possible under the current circumstances.”

Regarding the conditions set by the occupation for a ceasefire in Lebanon, most notably its right to invade Lebanese territory after receiving information about “hostile activities,” the reserve general describes them as “unacceptable to any political party in Lebanon.”

Neria also believes that the occupation’s condition of preventing the transfer of weapons from Syria to Lebanese territory is also unacceptable in Lebanon, and if the occupation wants to create a buffer zone, Hezbollah will not accept that, and this is not possible.

He stresses that Hezbollah is well aware that its expulsion to the north of the Litani River means one thing: the end of its control, and such a situation will require it to dissolve its military forces and hand over its weapons to the Lebanese army, and thus the “Islamic Resistance” will end, which is something the party cannot accept.

Neria pointed out that Hezbollah will continue to fight against “Israel” and is prepared for a long-term war of attrition for several months, and since it is still fighting, it is present, and therefore it can continue to play its role in preventing a possible settlement with Israel in light of the terms proposed by Israel.

He explained: “In Lebanon, they know what Israel’s talk about Hezbollah’s defeat means. It has one interpretation: that Israel is afraid and unable to penetrate Hezbollah’s defence system, and therefore it is content with invading a narrow strip along the border and does not dare to invade inside southern Lebanon for fear of the heavy losses that Hezbollah will inflict on its forces.”
