Israeli military tells Reuters, AFP their reporters’ safety in Gaza cannot be guaranteed
Israel’s military has told the Reuters and AFP news agencies that it cannot guarantee the safety of their journalists in Gaza, Reuters reported, citing a letter from the army.

Amid the ongoing Israeli bombardment, and plans by the military to step up ground operations, the army said: “We cannot guarantee you employees’ safety, and we strongly urge you to take all necessary measures for their safety”, according to the Reuters report.

Reuters said in a statement that Israel’s “unwillingness to give assurances about the safety of our staff threatens their ability to deliver the news about this conflict without fear of being injured or kill”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says 29 journalists have been killed since October 7, including Reuters’ Issam Abdallah, who was killed in a strike in southern Lebanon.

Earlier this week, the threat posed not only to journalists but also their families was thrown into stark relief when the wife, son, daughter and grandson of Al Jazeera Arabic’s Gaza bureau chief, Wael Dahdouh, were killed in an Israeli strike on Gaza.
