The channel accused #HelenFare of being “extremist.” A #German channel suspended a broadcaster because of her call to boycott Israeli products.

A German television channel (#SWR), partly funded by the German govt, suspended its presenter of Syrian origin, Helen Fares after she called for a boycott of Israeli products in protest against the war in the Gaza Strip.

Fares had published on her Instagram account a post in which she called for a boycott of Israeli products in a video clip she recorded, in which she announced an application that could be used to identify Israeli products in supermarkets.

Fares appears in the video, entering a store and telling her followers in English about her favorite chocolate drink from Alpro, a subsidiary of Danone, which she no longer buys due to these companies’ links to the Israeli occupation.

The clip angered the German channel, which described the broadcaster’s statements as “questionable” and “extremist.”

The channel later decided to suspend Fares from her work, according to a press release from the channel in which it pointed out that “the journalist repeatedly expressed extremist political positions on her private account on social media.”

The German channel stressed that Fares lacks neutrality in its activities on social media.

For her part, Helen Fares rejected the accusation of anti-Semitism, and defended the boycott of goods as a legitimate form of political influence.

According to the 29-year-old broadcaster, the occupation is currently being criticized around the world because of its military attack on the Gaza Strip, and it is also accused of committing genocide and gross human rights violations at the international level.

Fares added that she was threatened and insulted because of her statements, and lost her job.

She asked her followers to express their opinions, indicated her desire to continue her commitment, and said: “The German media is trying to silence all voices that speak on behalf of Palestine, and for this reason, we must raise our voices more and louder.”
