He sent Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, a top Christian leader, to meet Orban, claiming that if Islamist rebels take over, Christians in Syria could be in serious danger.

Assad is hoping Orban, who is close to Trump, will deliver this message to the new U.S. president and possibly gain support for his side.

🚨🇸🇾ASSAD PROPOSES NEW CONSTITUTION TO WIN OVER EXILED OPPOSITION

As insurgents close in on Damascus, Assad is attempting to strike a deal by proposing talks with Syria’s exiled opposition and drafting a new constitution.

In parallel, he sent Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II to Hungary, urging PM Orban to convey fears to Trump about threats to Syria’s Christian minority (10% of the population) under rebel rule.

Experts, however, remain skeptical, doubting whether Assad’s overtures can change his regime’s bleak prospects.
