Meena Kumari, the “Tragedy Queen” of Indian cinema

Meena Kumari, known as the “Tragedy Queen” of Indian cinema, was one of the most celebrated actresses in Bollywood during the 1950s and 1960s. Her captivating performances, especially in tragic roles, won her immense popularity and critical acclaim. She debuted in the film industry at the age of 9 and soon became a household name due to her compelling portrayal of complex characters. Meena Kumari’s work in films like Baiju Bawra (1952), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), and Pakeezah (1972) cemented her legacy as one of the finest actresses in Indian cinema.

Her personal life, however, was marked by hardship and tragedy, much like the roles she portrayed on screen. Married to poet and lyricist Kamal Amrohi, their relationship became tumultuous, and the stress and sadness from her personal life affected her health and career. Despite her personal struggles, Meena Kumari’s performances remained unmatched, and she won several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her health deteriorated due to her alcohol addiction, and she passed away in 1972 at the age of 39, leaving behind a legacy of heart-wrenching portrayals of sorrow and heartbreak.

Meena Kumari’s legacy endures, especially through her iconic film Pakeezah, which was released posthumously. Her performance in the film remains one of the most memorable in the history of Indian cinema. Since she is buried in the same cemetery as my mother in Rehmatabad, Mazgaon, Bombay, I recite a fatiha for her too whenever i go there. This is her grave. Her name given as Mahjabeen urf Meena Kumari So peaceful in repose.
