The WWII submarine HMS Trooper, which vanished in 1943 with 64 crew members, has been discovered 830 feet underwater in the Icarian Sea by researcher Kostas Thoktaridis and his team, ending an 81-year mystery.

The vessel, lost during a secret mission in the Eastern Mediterranean, was likely destroyed by a mine, breaking into three sections.

The submarine had previously rescued trapped soldiers and assisted British intelligence operations.

The discovery brings long-awaited closure to the families of the crew.
