At least 20 Nigerian university students were kidnapped by gunmen who ambushed their vehicles in Benue state on Thursday, according to police.

The students were traveling to a medical conference when they were attacked on Otukpo Road, a known hotspot for kidnappings.

The abducted students are from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos.

Kidnappings for ransom have become common in northern Nigeria, with many avoiding road travel due to the threat.

Authorities have not provided updates on rescue efforts or the identity of the attackers.
