After Japan sided with NATO to impose sanctions on Russia, Putin severed a treaty they had with them for reducing Russia’s nuclear stockpile and safely disposing of old soviet warheads.

Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin:

“The agreement between the Russian government and the government of Japan on cooperation in dismantling of nuclear weapons subject to reduction ceased to be in effect as of May 21, 2024.

This severance of relations is the choice made by the Japanese side.”
