BREAKING : Iranian researchers discover a new nano-formulation for treating cancerous tumours

Iranian researchers have discovered a new nano-formulation for the treatment of cancerous tumours in laboratory rats.

“Ellagic acid nanoliposomes potentiate therapeutic effects of PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin in melanoma: An in vitro and in vivo study” is the title of a research study conducted by Mahmoud Reza Jaafari, an Iranian professor and faculty member at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. This recently published research was funded by the Iranian National Science Foundation.

“Doxorubicin (Dox) is an antineoplastic agent that has a broad spectrum of activity,” he said, adding that “the new formulation can increase the efficacy of chemotherapy by destroying vascular cells and cutting off the supply of blood and oxygen to the tumour, and as well as directly eliminating tumour cells. It is used in many cancers, including breast and lung cancer, and has broad anti-tumour activity.”

Jaafari continued: “Over the past two decades, many studies have been carried out to find a method of targeting and delivering drugs to the tumour, and so far the use of liposomes has been the most important and best method.”
