REPORT : Israel Is Creating Security Vacuum in Gaza by Backing Armed Looters, Killing Police

A new Mondoweiss report by Faris Giacaman and Tareq Hajjaj reveals how Israel is dismantling Gaza’s civil infrastructure by assassinating civilian officials and enabling looting, in what local officials say is an intentional campaign to plunge Gaza into chaos. Here are some of the key details:

➤ Israel has systematically targeted Gaza’s police, civil defense, and civil government officials, labeling them “Hamas operatives” to justify assassinations.
➤ Eyewitnesses say looters are operating with Israeli air support, including drone cover, and some reports indicate them receiving weapons from undercover operatives posing as local civilians.
➤ On May 2, Israeli airstrikes killed Gaza police officer As’ad Yahya Kafarneh, who was reportedly protecting food warehouses from gangs “collaborating with the occupation.”
➤ Gaza officials warn these armed groups are working “on the directives of Israeli forces” to disrupt order and exacerbate famine.
➤ During the January–March “ceasefire”, Gaza’s police restored order and protected aid convoys—until Israel broke the truce and started escalating attacks targeting top civil officials.
➤ U.S. officials (under Biden) previously warned Israel not to kill civilian police who escort aid convoys, citing the risk of total lawlessness.
➤ The Arrow Unit, a Gaza security force tasked with stopping looters, has also been targeted. It has reportedly been involved in detaining and executing alleged collaborators.
➤ Gaza’s Interior Ministry still vows to confront looters “at any cost,” despite being under constant threat of Israeli targeting.

BREAKING: The truce that started at 12 PM today to facilitate the release of Edan Alexander is officially over and the Israeli air force is back to conducting airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu tried to sabotage the deal intended to release the American captive:

According to a report by Yedioth Ahronoth, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer actively sought to prevent a U.S.-Hamxs deal that aimed to secure the release of American captives held in Gaza.

The report, citing a senior U.S. diplomatic and intelligence official, alleges that Netanyahu’s office leaked details of a meeting between U.S. hostage envoy Adam Boehler and senior Hamxs officials in Doha.

This leak was reportedly intended to create a rift between Washington and Jerusalem, potentially causing Hamxs to harden its positions and allowing Netanyahu to blame Hamxs for any failure to reach a deal.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas lifted the ban on Qatar’s Al Jazeera television network, allowing it to resume operations in the Palestinian territories starting Tuesday.—Reuters.

Palestinians risked their lives to retrieve bags of flour from homes in danger zones like al-Shujaiyah during a temporary truce meant for the release of one prisoner.

Despite the ceasefire, dozens were shot, injured, or killed by Israeli quadcopter drones still circling the area. Many rushed to salvage food, but only the lucky made it out alive.

Total Number of detainees in Israeli Occupation Prisons as of Early May 2025:

The number of prisoners and detainees in Israeli occupation prisons exceeds 10,100 as of early May 2025, including at least 400 children and 35 female prisoners.

The number of administrative detainees stands at 3,577.

The number of Gaza detainees classified by the Israeli prison administration as “unlawful combatants” and officially recognized as such is 1,846—noting that this figure does not include all Gaza detainees, particularly those held in military camps run by the Israeli army.

Prior to the genocidal war, the total number of prisoners in Israeli prisons was over 5,250, with 40 female prisoners, 170 children, and approximately 1,320 administrative detainees.

BREAKING: Hamas Statement:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Al-Qassam Brigades have just released the Zionist soldier holding American citizenship, Idan Alexander, following communications with the U.S. administration and as part of the efforts made by mediators to secure a ceasefire, reopen border crossings, and deliver aid and relief to our people in the Gaza Strip.

This step comes after important contacts during which the Hamas movement showed a high level of positivity and flexibility.

We affirm that serious and responsible negotiations can achieve results in securing the release of prisoners, while continued aggression only prolongs their suffering and may lead to their deaths.

We reaffirm the movement’s readiness to immediately begin negotiations to reach a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire agreement, ensure the withdrawal of the occupation army, lift the blockade, implement a prisoner exchange, and begin the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

We urge President Trump’s administration to continue its efforts to end this brutal war waged by the war criminal Netanyahu against children, women, and unarmed civilians in Gaza.

JUST IN: Gaza Faces Man-Made Famine, IPC Warns in May 2025 Report

The latest IPC report finds that 100% of Gaza’s 2.1 million people are facing crisis-level or worse food insecurity. One in five is projected to face catastrophic hunger or starvation between May and September 2025.

➤ 495,000 people (23%) will likely face famine conditions (IPC Phase 5).
➤ 1.1 million more are expected to reach IPC Phase 4 (emergency).
➤ 70,500 children under five already suffer acute malnutrition; many need urgent treatment to survive.
➤ 17,000 pregnant or breastfeeding women require emergency nutrition.
➤ The collapse is blamed on the total siege, commercial closures, and attacks on aid routes and civilians.
➤ Famine is “likely” if the siege and military operations continue, especially in northern Gaza.
➤ The temporary relief from the January–February pause was erased by the March offensive and border closures.
➤ UN agencies warn: Waiting for a formal famine declaration means people will already be dead.

Since March, all aid has been blocked. Food, water, and medicine are nearly gone. Communities are collapsing under extreme survival conditions.

Immediate action required:
• Unconditional ceasefire
• Full humanitarian access
• Restoration of essential services
• Urgent, life-saving aid

This is no longer just a humanitarian crisis—it is a man-made famine unfolding in real time. The world must act now.

The American prisoner Idan Alexander has been handed over to the Red Cross without any formal ceremony and is now on his way to the Israeli army.

U.S President Trump blasts ABC news when asked about Qatar’s gift:

REPORTER: What do you say to people who view that luxury jet as a personal gift to you?

TRUMP: You’re ABC fake news, right? Let me tell you — you should be embarrassed asking that question. They’re giving us a free jet … when they give you a putt, you pick it up and you walk to the next hole

⚡️JUST IN:

A group of Israeli settlers tried to smuggle a small goat hidden in a red bag into Al-Aqsa Mosque to perform a Passover sacrifice. Six were arrested after attempting to bring the goat onto Al-Aqsa Mosque.

While Israeli police intervened, it wasn’t out of respect for Muslim sentiments but because some Jewish religious groups oppose sacrifices without a rebuilt Temple, as required by Jewish law. However, religious Zionist groups have issued their own rulings allowing such sacrifices to push for the eventual demolition of Al-Aqsa and the construction of the Temple.

This was once unthinkable, but growing religious Zionist influence has made such acts more frequent. In another attempt, mosque guards from the Ministry of Religious Endowments stopped settlers from entering through a different gate to perform the sacrifice.
