Michael Schena, a U.S. State Department official, has been charged with transmitting classified information—paid thousands in Chinese yuan.

FBI agents say he photographed secret documents and sent them to a contact identified as “Jason,” using a covert iPhone.

Surveillance caught Schena accessing classified U.S. diplomatic files before snapping photos of them at his workstation.

The scheme allegedly ran from 2022 to 2023. With links to China dating back to his LSU days, Schena was ordered held in jail until trial.

China has long used LinkedIn and social media for spy recruitment.

This case exposes how Beijing exploits weak links inside the U.S. government.
