German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is deeply offended by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks, insisting Germany’s “firewall” against the far-right must hold.

“I explicitly reject what U.S. Vice President Vance said at the Munich Security Conference.

From the experiences of National Socialism, the democratic parties in Germany have formed a common consensus: This is the firewall against far-right parties.”

He’s referring to the Cordon Sanitaire, a long-standing European practice where mainstream parties refuse to work with right-wing populists—no matter how many votes they get.

But with parties like AfD surging in Germany, how long can Scholz keep pretending voters don’t exist?
