The United Nations will not replace the Palestinian relief agency (UNRWA) after Israel’s decision to cut ties and end a cooperation agreement.

A new law bans UNRWA’s operations in Israel starting in late January, threatening its services in Gaza and the West Bank.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ chef de cabinet noted that the responsibility for humanitarian aid lies with Israel.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warned of “disastrous consequences,” as millions of Palestinians rely on the agency for essential services.
