Turkish police raided the home of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu at dawn, detaining him for questioning just one day after Istanbul University revoked his degree, effectively barring him from running for president.
Shortly after his detention, Turkish prosecutors accused İmamoğlu of establishing a criminal network for extortionand running a political campaign linked to the PKK before the 2024 elections—bringing two separate charges against Erdogan’s top opposition rival.
This morning, nearly 100 individuals tied to İmamoğlu were also detained, including several mayors and prominent journalist Ismail Saymaz. Turkish police have shut down major roads and Taksim Square metro station, preparing for potential protests from Kemalist opposition supporters.
İmamoğlu warned of an assault on democracy, posting:
“The will of the people is being dealt a blow.”
